Productivity

So I recently reduced my hours at work, and this is the first time I’ve worked part time. It’s taking some getting used to, but actually gives me one guilt-free day a week. No work, no children (for most of the day), I try and do housework in the evenings, so it’s just shopping to do.

In the current climate, that’s exactly what I needed. To look after myself and listen to what my needs are – both physically and mentally. It’s easy to burn out and try and do everything. I recognise that I’m in a fortunate position in that I can afford to work 4 days a week, and it’s not possible for everyone, but I truly believe I’ve worked hard to get to this point, and now it’s time for a bit of self-care.

The last six months or so have been quite a journey, and while I hate to appear arrogant (arrogance is a REALLY BIG pet hate of mine!), I’m proud of what I’ve achieved.

My counselling has been so incredibly valuable, it’s broken down barriers that weren’t really there (just in my mind), brought me closer to my family, and showed me how to protect the heart I so often wear on my sleeve.

Equally, my careers counselling has helped me see what my real values are, what needs I have, and how they can be met either in a job or at home. I’m sure many would say I already knew most of these things, but how often do we just keep going, and not actually take time to really reflect on these things?
Having an hour with my coach every fortnight, plus a few hours of homework in between each session, has made me carve out time to reflect on what I want in life, and boy has it been insightful. I very much see it as an investment in my future, and I’m so pleased I’m doing it.

But how does all of this link to productivity? How on earth does working less hours relate?
Amazingly, it has made me more focused and more motivated. I have a vague plan each day – morning, lunchtime, afternoon, early evening and evening, and I set myself a list each day of what I want to achieve, both at home and at work.
It’s very different at the moment as home = workplace (and I have moved my desk three times in the last six weeks…), and therefore putting a load of washing on while the kettle boils is much easier, but I actually really enjoy it. Having a day of not having to think about housework and too much life admin each week is a real blessing.

So, if you’re not feeling very productive, have a think about what needs might not be being met, what motivates you, and if you can structure your day or week differently.
